As most Vaasans and outsiders did not know the nature of this parasitic relationship to Telos, it was widely assumed that the Ironfell Council's role was to commune with the primordial, who was publicly venerated by the Warlock Knights similarly to a deity. The council was named in honor of ironfell, a magical metal harvested from the primordial Telos which granted the Warlock Knights many of their powers. Although each Knight-Councilor had a suite of rooms to themselves in the Citadel, they preferred to come together as little as possible, and instead spend time in the lands which they individually ruled directly. The council met five days out of every month at the Citadel of the Iron Sky in Telos City to debate and decide issues of government. The council held the power to conscript its citizens into military service, including high ranking Knights and their entire armies. The Ironfell Council was the undisputed pinnacle of Vaasa's feudal hierarchy, and one of its primary duties was to perpetuate this hierarchy by allocating land and vassals to Warlock Knights as they ascended the order's ranks. The final member of the council, and also its leader, was the mysterious and long-lived founder of the Warlock Knights known only as the Voice of Telos. As members of the Ironfell Council, these Vindicators were known as Knight-Councilors. Among them were the twelve most powerful members of the Warlock Knights who had attained the rank of Vindicator, meaning they were powerful land-owning feudal nobles with their own standing armies and to whom lesser-ranked Knights swore their allegiance. A beholder judges its own worth by its acquisitions, and it never willingly parts with its treasures.Ī beholder’s central lair is typically a large, spacious cavern with high ceilings, where it can attack without fear of closing to melee range. The council was made up of thirteen members. It festoons its chambers with trophies from the battles it has won, including petrified adventurers standing frozen in their horrified final moments, pieces of other beholders, and magic items wrested from powerful foes. When intruders do break in, the height of its open ceilings allows a beholder to float up and harry foes on the floor.Īs alien as their creator, the rooms in a beholder’s lair reflect the creature’s arrogance. Such an environment allows a beholder to move freely, even as it prevents intruders from easily creeping about. A beholder’s lair is carved out by its disintegration eye ray, emphasizing vertical passages connecting chambers stacked on top of each other. An eye tyrant sometimes carves out a domain within or under a major city, commanding networks of agents that operate on their master’s behalf.Īlien Lairs. Because they refuse to share territory with others, most beholders withdraw to frigid hills, abandoned ruins, and deep caverns to scheme. Rather than live in isolation, the aptly named eye tyrants enslave those other creatures, founding and controlling vast empires. Even slight differences of coloration in hide can turn two beholders into lifelong enemies.Įye Tyrant. Some beholders manage to channel their xenophobic tendencies into a terrible despotism. Some have eyestalks that writhe like tentacles, while others’ stalks bear crustacean-like joints. Some beholders are protected by overlapping chitinous plates. Beholders vary greatly in their physical forms, making conflict between them inevitable. Each beholder believes its form to be an ideal, and that any deviation from that form is a flaw in the racial purity of its kind. The disdain a beholder has for other creatures extends to other beholders. Beholders always suspect others of plotting against them, even when no other creatures are around. Beholders are convinced that other creatures resent them for their brilliance and magical power, even as they dismiss those lesser creatures as crude and disgusting. Xenophobic Isolationists. Enemies abound, or so every beholder believes. When a beholder sleeps, it closes its central eye but leaves its smaller eyes open and alert. Aggressive, hateful, and greedy, these aberrations dismiss all other creatures as lesser beings, toying with them or destroying them as they choose.Ī beholder’s spheroid body levitates at all times, and its great bulging eye sits above a wide, toothy maw, while the smaller eyestalks that crown its body twist and turn to keep its foes in sight. One glance at a beholder is enough to assess its foul and otherworldly nature. "Every beholder thinks it is the epitome of beholderkind, and the only thing it fears is that it might be wrong."

He passed away there on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at the age of 20 years. After a tragic accident, Reese sustained injuries and was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Reese was doing that last Saturday evening. Reese loved to spend time with his family and friends. The Cooper family are avid Hawkeye fans and enjoyed going to Iowa Football games in the fall. He had a great sense of humor and a memorable laugh. Reese had a big heart and infectious smile. Reese was a child of God, who made profession of his faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus at the Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, Iowa where his family actively attended. If you knew Reese you understood he loved food, cooking, and found enjoyment working at Wasabi Sushi in Waukee and Fleming’s Steakhouse. Reese was currently attending Des Moines Area Community College and planned to graduate from Iowa State University with a degree in sales and marketing. After graduation, Reese furthered his education by attending Iowa State University and joined the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Reese loved sports and participated in football, baseball, basketball, student council and Best Buddies, while in high school. Reese was educated in the Waukee School District and graduated from Waukee High School with the class of 2020. He was the oldest of three children born to Christopher Scott Cooper and Bethany Jo (Hutchens) Cooper. Reese Michael Cooper was born December 12, 2001, in Chicago, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Boys and Girls Club. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 8, at 11:00 am at the Lutheran Church of Hope. Visitation with the family present will be Friday, October 7, from 3:00 - 6:00 pm at the Lutheran Church of Hope, West Des Moines. Those left to cherish his memory are his parents Chris and Bethany Cooper of Clive, his brother, Ryan Cooper and his sister, Rylee Cooper. But it was his use of the seemingly ancient word abracadabra as a talisman-like charm that eventually led to its long association with magic and sleight of hand. Whether Sammonicus’s cure worked or not is beside the point (derived from a New World crop, it would be another millennium before European doctors began using quinine to treat malaria). The patient should then wear this inverted pyramid of letters on a string around their neck, where it would act like a funnel, channeling the illness out of their body. Then ABRACADA, ABRACAD, ABRACA, and so on, until on the bottom line is written nothing more than a letter A: Beneath that is ABRACADAB, with the final R now gone. Beneath that is written ABRACADABR, with the last letter A omitted. In chapter 51 of his textbook, Sammonicus advises that any patient suffering from a fever should be given a piece of papyrus, at the top of which is written the magical word ABRACADABRA. But to treat full-on malarial fever, he explained, you really had to resort to magic. But whatever its etymology might be, there is one thing sets abracadabra apart from all the other “magic” words-it was once believed to be genuinely, miraculously, magic.īack in the 3rd century, a Roman scholar and physician named Quintus Serenus Sammonicus wrote a lengthy medical manuscript called De medicina praecepta, or “The Rules of Medicine.” Sammonicus’s cures included pouring a mixture of ox bile and sheep’s urine into the ear to cure earache, wrapping the head of a delusional patient with the bloody lungs of a recently slaughtered sheep, and treating one type of recurrent fever by placing the fourth book of Homer’s Iliad beneath a patient’s pillow. Or perhaps it derives from abecadarius, a Latin word essentially meaning “alphabetical order,” in which case it might once have implied putting everything magically back in its correct place or order. Alternatively, it might be a mangled corruption of the Hebrew words ab (“father”), ben (“son”), and ruach acadosch (“holy spirit”). One theory is that it comes from ancient Aramaic, and might once have meant something like “I create as I speak,” perhaps a phrase lifted from some ancient religious text. Hocus-pocus is thought to be a corruption of Hoc est corpus meum, “this is my body,” words used in the Latin Catholic Mass. Shazam was originally Captain Marvel’s catchphrase, coined so that it gave him the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury. Why do magicians say “hey presto”? Well, as anyone who’s ever had piano lessons will likely know, presto means “quickly” in Italian, and so has long been used by conjurors to draw attention to some sudden, magical appearance or disappearance on stage. As a physical preparation they do many push-ups, pump their abs and back, squat. Athletes thoroughly warm up, involving all muscle groups in this process. The axe is a heavy projectile, so you have to use the strongest muscles of the body to accelerate it to the necessary speed: the muscles of the hips, buttocks, and back. Wooden grips need to be replaced more often. BATTLE AXE THROWING PROFESSIONALProfessional athletes prefer flat grips: in harsh competition conditions (fatigue, wet weather) the ledge can cling to the fingers unpredictably. The grip forms an additional joint in the hand, it can help to twist the axe more if necessary. The handle can be straight and level, or with a hook. They enter the target easily and deeply, but blunt quickly. Carpentry axes are sharpened with a minimum angle. Such an axe does not blunt for a long time, holds a blow, easily pulls out of the wood, but it is not suitable for all types of target (the paint may keep the axe in, and dense fibers squeeze out). Felling axes have a special sharpening with a large angle. The cutting edge can be sharpened in different ways. The soft pads protect the hard part from impact, and the hard insert in turn ensures that the cutting edge is securely sharpened. Let us look at some parts of the axe in details.Īn axe can be made with a technique where it is divided into two halves, and a carbide-forged material with a cutting edge is inserted between them. Professionals know how the features of certain parts of the projectile affect the throw. Throwing axes are completely different: they can be sharp and blunt, light and heavy, expensive and cheap. It emphasized the high status of its owner. In the northern tribes chiefs owned such weapons. It had the form of a halberd, only of a smaller size. The halberd was initially made in Spain. There is something similar to a pipe axe, only it was less decorated with additional decorative elements and was used by settlers as a combat weapon. Sometimes tribal leaders walked with such axes. It was not used in battle, but was given as a decorative gift. Trumpeted throwing axe is the most beautiful kind, as it was decorated with writings, stones and patterns. In ancient times, it was used mostly in battles, sometimes to carve the carcass of an animal. Another type is used as decorations and weapons in medieval and fantasy series.Speaking of the very first type among tomahawk axes, the head was hammered into a sturdy axe.Tomahawk (this term is used to refer to the throwing axe) is divided into the following types, each of them having particular characteristics. In the present, it is used in competitions, as well as in survival mode. This particular weapon was used because it is very sharp and does a lot of damage. In the past, it used to be a frequently used tool during battles and battles. Unlike throwing knives, the tool has a heavier weight and a different shape. The axeĪ throwing axe is a sharp tool used in throwing competitions. Now, let us take a closer look at this spectacular discipline. In fact, the axe is an exceptionally beautiful and effective throwing tool, for the operation of which strength is not as important as precise calculation and masterful control of one’s own body. From the outside, it seems that throwing an axe requires the strength of a giant. Spinning in the air, the axe makes a rhythmic whistling sound, and when it reaches the target, it shakes it with such a roar that viewers involuntarily squeeze their eyes. At long distances (more than 20 m) the heavy projectile flies in a measured and majestic manner. Axe throwing is an amazingly spectacular sport. There is a visual and perceptual oscillation between the materiality of paint and resin on canvas, and the depth of the celestial realms they infer.Ĭowen doesn’t try to recreate the past nor foresee the future. Cowen avoids the potential slide into the saccharine with an intuitive counterbalance of these candied hues with darker grounds and uncanny imagery. Thick speckles of these vibrant colours are often added at the end, suspended in resin on the surface of the canvas. Deep blues and purples are offset by bright accents of pink, orange and green. Scientific hypotheses are often wildly imaginative and creative, and Cowen’s poetic treatment of imagery, sourced and re-configured from a combination of New Scientist magazines and vintage photographs, points to a fundamental human pursuit of meaning and connection beyond the realm of the visible.Ĭowen creates environments with ‘washes’ and ‘pours’ that are equal parts intent and chance, and augments them with the addition of recognisable elements – plants, planets, figures, objects. Her subjects include a hazmat-suited figure probing a pulsating vortex a man with wood-and-fabric wings outstretched like Icarus, testing an early flying device people in lab coats huddled over imaginary desks and microscopes figures shrouded in viewing and protective devices that are equal parts nostalgia, science and steampunk. In her paintings, Kathryn Cowen employs a recognisably scientific vernacular. Where the two often diverge is in the nature of the conclusions they seek: science gives the impression of moving inexorably towards a logical endpoint, a complete unravelling of the mysteries of the universe art tends to revel in the inherent un-knowableness of things. The disciplines of art and science – at times almost indistinguishable, and at others irreconcilable – are twin avenues in the very human search for underlying patterns, substance and meaning. The artists invite you to delve into ‘The Land of The Green Ghosts’. They come together to explore our connection to the environment and the different ways that we perceive it in this time of grave ecological change. They put no stock into the expected, the accepted, and the regurgitated but stalwartly embrace painting as an avenue to discovery. It is this sense of wonder the artists wish to share with the viewer, a world renewed, seen afresh, without the constraints of rationality or the pervasive mundane. The artists present canvases saturated with the colours of implied bioluminescence, aurora borealis and other natural wonders. While each artist has her own approach – albeit psychological, spiritual, or environmental – they each surrender to the sensuous materiality of paint and allow process-based practice to take precedence. Each artist hopes to offer a new standpoint of the natural world, and the issues facing it, and are unapologetically driven by a subjective response to both landscape and to painting practice. This collaboratively conceived exhibition explores the many subtle and complex layers of the natural world through the unique perspectives of three contemporary female painters, Naomi Bishop, Kathryn Cowen and Valentina Palonen. Desperately peering into microscopes looking for an answer, how will we adapt and grow in our relationship to nature in this new world order? The COVID-19 pandemic has diminished our perceived human power. The work is intended to question our ecological future and invite the viewer to imagine alternate realities and future biological forms. This new work will present specimens from a post apocalyptic world where the scale and relationship between fauna and fauna has been inverted, minuscule life forms rule and the light we live by has changed. The other cadets carried a Zambian flag and a staff in the shape of “a crested eagle on a dinner plate atop a sawn-off broomstick.” Nkoloso said he had been inspired by his first airplane flight. Nkoloso’s dog, Cyclops, was to follow in the paw prints of Russian “muttnik” Laika. Matha Mwamba, sixteen, was headed for Mars. (They were quick to explain that these were not space suits: “No, we are the Dynamite Rock Music Group when we are not space cadets.”) Godfrey Mwango, at twenty-one, had been tasked with the moon landing. His astronauts sometimes wore green satin jackets with yellow trousers. Nkoloso wore a standard-issue combat helmet, a khaki military uniform, and a flowing cape-multicolored silk or heliotrope velvet, with an embroidered neck and festooned with medals. “But I’ll be laughing the day I plant Zambia’s flag on the moon.” “Some people think I’m crazy,” Nkoloso told a reporter for the Associated Press. Others wondered if it was “a semiserious space program” or “a useful publicity stunt.” Their interviews with Nkoloso did little to clarify whether his space program was serious, silly, or a sendup. “We do not know whether to take the announcement of this news from Lusaka seriously, or whether to conclude that Zambia somehow has been victimized by a Madison Avenue type,” one confessed. Time’ s whimsical footnote prompted a flurry of interest from foreign reporters. Already Nkoloso is training twelve Zambian astronauts, including a curvaceous 16-year-old girl, by spinning them around a tree in an oil drum and teaching them to walk on their hands, “the only way humans can walk on the moon.” He is Edward Mukuka Nkoloso, a grade-school science teacher and the director of Zambia’s National Academy of Science, Space Research and Philosophy, who claimed the goings-on interfered with his space program to beat the U.S. One noted Zambian failed to share in all the harmony.
